Old photographs prove
the existence of a catering establishment here
probably at least as far back as the Second World
War. Until about 1980, that took the form of a
beach hut known as "SNAX". At around that time,
the first sea defence wall was built which meant
that SNAX had to be demolished. In its place the
well known Cliff Austin, then owner, persuaded
the local authority to give permission for construction
of a permanent structure right by the sea - almost
unheard of in this town. Thus came about the simple
and slightly hispanic building now known as Café
Oasis.
The Austin family continued to operate
very much in the traditional way until 1993. After
a short and inconclusive interlude, the Cocks
family took over in 1996 with optimistic ideas
about a different sort of operation, ideas which
have largely been realised. We now operate all
year round, offering simple but quality food by
day and something rather more elaborate at night.
